Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino: where to find each one in Tanzania, the best time to go and tips for your game drives.
The Big Five are the most sought-after sightings on safari. The term came from hunters, for the five animals hardest to hunt on foot. Tanzania is a top destination for them thanks to its large protected areas, healthy wildlife populations and experienced guides.
Lion
Tanzania has one of Africa’s largest wild lion populations. Best places: the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Nyerere and Ruaha. The Serengeti is known for big prides on open plains; Ngorongoro offers lions all year. Best time: all year, with the best visibility from June to October.
Leopard
Elusive and perfectly camouflaged in trees and thick bush, which makes every sighting special. Best places: the Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ruaha. Early morning and late afternoon drives give the best chances.
African elephant
Best places: Tarangire, the Serengeti, Ruaha and Nyerere. Tarangire is famous for huge herds — often hundreds of elephants — along the river in the dry season. Best time: June to October.
African buffalo
Found in almost every major park, in large herds on the plains or near water. Best places: the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, Tarangire and Katavi. Best time: all year.
Black rhinoceros
The rarest of the Big Five and a conservation success story. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in Tanzania to see black rhinos in the wild. Sightings are not guaranteed, but experienced guides know where they are most often found; early mornings are often best.
Can you see all five on one safari?
Yes, with a well-planned itinerary that includes the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater — for example 6–7 days through Tarangire, the Central Serengeti, the northern or southern Serengeti (by season) and the crater. June to October is widely considered the best period; January to March is also excellent and adds the wildebeest calving season.
