There is no single best time to visit Tanzania — it depends on what you want to see, your budget and your safari style. Here is our month-by-month guide for 2026/2027.
Tanzania offers wildlife, landscapes and cultural experiences all year: the Great Wildebeest Migration, Kilimanjaro climbs, Zanzibar’s beaches and the Big Five. There is no single ‘best’ time to visit — the right time depends on what you want to see, your budget and your safari style.
Tanzania’s seasons at a glance
- Dry season (June to October): the most popular safari period. Vegetation is sparse, animals gather at rivers and waterholes, and the weather is sunny with cool mornings and evenings.
- Green season (November to May): occasional rain turns the landscape lush. Wildlife is abundant, birdlife is strong, and there are fewer crowds and better rates.
Tanzania weather by month
- January: excellent wildlife viewing, warm and green. The herds gather in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu before calving.
- February: the peak of calving, with thousands of calves born every day — and lions, cheetahs, hyenas and leopards close by.
- March: outstanding wildlife before the long rains, with quiet parks.
- April: the long rains — but safaris are still lovely, with lower prices, fewer visitors, superb birding and lush scenery.
- May: good value; some roads are harder going but many lodges offer discounts.
- June: the dry season begins. The migration reaches the western Serengeti and the Grumeti.
- July: one of the busiest months: great weather, the migration moves north and the Mara River crossings begin.
- August: dramatic crossings of the Mara River — peak safari season.
- September: excellent game viewing in dry, comfortable weather.
- October: the last dry month, with wildlife staying near water.
- November: the short rains bring fresh grass and fewer visitors as the herds head south.
- December: warm and green as the migration returns south; book early for Christmas and New Year.
Best time for different experiences
- Great Migration: January–March (calving), June (Grumeti crossings), July–September (Mara crossings), November–December (return south).
- Big Five: June to October.
- Birdwatching: November to April.
- Honeymoon: June to October, with great weather on Zanzibar too.
- Families: June, July, August and December.
- Budget travellers: April, May and November.
Peak season or green season?
| Feature | Peak season | Green season |
|---|---|---|
| Wildlife viewing | Excellent | Excellent |
| Crowds | Higher | Lower |
| Accommodation prices | Higher | Lower |
| Photography | Excellent | Excellent |
| Birdwatching | Good | Outstanding |
| Landscapes | Dry | Lush and green |
Both seasons are rewarding — the choice depends on your priorities: the wildlife you most want to see, your budget, whether you prefer quiet places or lively camps, school holidays and how long you can stay.
