Destinations, timing, how long to go, costs, packing, safety and safari etiquette — a complete first-timer's guide.

This guide covers destinations, parks, timing, costs and packing for a first safari — with the Great Migration, the Big Five and an optional Zanzibar beach add-on.

Why Tanzania for your first safari?

  • Serengeti National Park and the Great Migration
  • The Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Good chances to see the Big Five
  • Options for every budget, from camping to luxury lodges
  • Easy access to Zanzibar’s beaches
  • Cultural experiences with local communities

When to go

June to October (dry season): pleasant weather, animals at rivers, thin vegetation and dry roads — ideal for first-timers. January to March (calving season): hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth on the southern plains, with strong predator action and green landscapes. November to December (green season): lush plains, fewer crowds and lower rates.

Which parks — and for how long?

  • Serengeti: 2–4 nights.
  • Ngorongoro Crater: 1 night.
  • Tarangire: 1–2 nights; elephants, baobabs and 500+ bird species.
  • Lake Manyara: half a day to a full day; tree-climbing lions, hippos and seasonal flamingos.

3 days: Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater. 5 days: Tarangire, the Serengeti and the crater — our suggestion for first-timers. 7 days: add Lake Manyara and the northern or southern Serengeti, at a slower pace.

Costs

About US$250–350 per person per day for budget, US$400–700 for mid-range and from US$800 for luxury. Park fees, accommodation, meals, a guide, a 4×4 and drinking water are usually included; flights, visas, insurance and personal expenses are not.

What to pack

  • Passport and travel documents
  • Neutral-coloured clothing — no bright colours or camouflage
  • Comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Camera with extra memory cards, binoculars and a power bank
  • A light jacket for early game drives
  • Personal medication

Safety and etiquette

Tanzania is one of Africa’s safest and most welcoming safari destinations. Book with a licensed operator, follow your guide, secure your valuables, buy comprehensive insurance and keep a safe distance from wildlife. Speak quietly around animals, never feed them, stay in the vehicle unless told otherwise, don’t litter and respect local cultures.

Frequently asked questions

Visa: requirements depend on your nationality — check current rules. Currency: Tanzanian shilling; US dollars widely accepted. Children: many lodges welcome families; some luxury camps have minimum ages. Language: Swahili, with English widely spoken in tourism.
