Each park offers a different safari. Compare the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire to find the right match for your interests, travel style and budget.

Tanzania has several famous parks, each offering a different safari. Many itineraries combine all three — but if you are planning your first safari, this guide helps you match a park to your interests, travel style and budget.

Serengeti National Park

Tanzania’s most famous park, covering nearly 15,000 km², known for open plains, abundant predators and the Great Migration of more than 1.5 million wildebeest. Best wildlife: lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hyenas, wildebeest, zebras, hippos and crocodiles. Best time: January–March (calving), June–July (Grumeti crossings), July–October (Mara crossings). Ideal for first-timers, photographers, big-cat lovers, luxury travellers and honeymooners.

Ngorongoro Crater

One of Africa’s natural wonders, formed when a giant volcano collapsed. Animals rarely leave the crater floor, so you can see many species in a single day — and it is one of the best places to spot the endangered black rhino. It can be visited all year. Ideal for families, travellers with limited time and anyone hoping to see rhinos.

Tarangire National Park

A hidden gem with fewer crowds, huge elephant herds and tall baobab trees. In the dry season thousands of animals gather along the Tarangire River, and more than 500 bird species have been recorded. Best from June to October. Ideal for elephant lovers, birdwatchers, families and budget travellers.
