Overview
Arusha National Park lies about 50 km from Mount Kilimanjaro and less than an hour’s drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Its main feature is Mount Meru, a volcano of about 4,566 m (14,980 ft) that is often climbed, with wonderful views from its slopes. The small park combines tropical rainforest, large lakes, craters, waterfalls, mountains and grassy plains.
Wildlife
At least 400 bird species live here, including the silvery-cheeked hornbill and the greater flamingo — at certain times of year thousands gather on the park’s lakes. The park is known for its rare black-and-white colobus monkeys, easy to recognise by their long tails; their name comes from the Greek kolobos, ‘stump’, for their short thumb.
Activities
Game drives through the rainforest, guided walking safaris with an Arusha park ranger, canoeing on the Momella Lakes and climbs of Mount Meru.
